YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

A youth development approach is a positive and holistic way of supporting young people's development.  It helps to ensure that young people are fully prepared for adult life by addressing their broader developmental needs instead of focusing primarily on solving or fixing their 'problems'.  Youth development is a developmentally driven analysis of what young people need, what they get, where they get it, what they do, should and can do.  It changes from what we do not want them to do, to looking at broader outcomes, inputs, settings, strategies and contributors needed to help and support young people.

The Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa focuses on enhancing protective factors in young people's lives, supporting a sense of belonging and connectedness to key social environments, ensuring young people have safe and caring relationships, promoting young people's active participation and engagement in all areas of their lives (click here for the Ministry of Youth Development Web Site for more info).  The core to the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa is a strength-based approach to positively developing young people.  When positive development happens, young people are more likely to grow up with positive outcomes in many areas of their lives.

The Youth One Stop Shop works from a youth development foundation - it is all about young people, asset based, holistically and developmentally appropriate, reflecting local needs and involving young people and their families/whanau.
