Aims from Constitution

  • To provide a holistic service which includes support, counselling, information, advisory and referral services for young people in Palmerston North
  • To foster, develop, deliver and facilitate programmes which empower young people
  • To assist young people towards social, educational, emotional and physical well-being.

Vision: To provide one place which provides young people with a range of services that are accessible, youth appropriate and holistic.

The Youth One Stop Shop empowers young people to make informed choices to enhance their positive well-being and self development.    We strive for a community where young people have the opportunities to actively participate in decisions which impact on their well-being

History

The Youth One Stop Shop was opened in 1994 in response to research, in the city of Palmerston North, in relation to the needs of young people.  It was started by a group of people passionate about supporting the development. of young people.  It was run on volunteer member's passion, energy, and vision at a local grass roots level.


The Youth One Stop Shop is currently an approved Social Service Provider by the Department of Child Youth and Family, Ministry of Health, Central PHO, has a contract with the Lottery Grants Board and receives funding from the Palmerston North City Council.  The Youth One Stop Shop is an Incorporated Society under the 1908 Act.


The Youth One Stop Shop is active in networking locally, regionally and nationally and has representation on the  National Youth Workers Network Aotearoa and President of New Zealand Association of Adolescent Health and Development.

The Youth One Stop Shop is an acknowledged successful market leader in the provision of services for young people.  The Youth One Stop Shop is distinctively competent in the provision of its core services and innovative in the development of new programmes and projects to meet the needs of young people in Palmerston North.  The organisation has proven management, strategic planning and policy development skills and has shown a steady growth in clients .

YOSS Milestones

  • Development of the Palmerston North Skate Park 1998-2002
  • Youth Worker Colin Eriksen received a Civic Award for his work in developing the Skate Park - 2002
  • Winner of the TrustPower Community Award for Child and Youth 2004
  • Winner of MidCentral DHB Primary Health Care Award for Child & Youth Health 2006
  • Successful joint tender with the Highbury Whanau Centre for the development and delivery of the Youth Transition Service Contract from MSD in 2006. This service opened in April 2007.
  • Nurse Mo Harte received a MidCentral DHB Award for Clinical Excellence in Primary Health Care 2007
  • Joint finalists with the Highbury Whanau Centre in MidCentral DHB Primary Health Care Excellence in Child/Youth Health Services Award 2007
  • Finalists in the Chamber of Commerce Manawatu Business Awards 2007
  • YOSS completes the first cycle of work in the Te Wana process 2008
  • Director Trissel Mayor publishes a book on supervision for Youth Workers
  • Doctor Dave Ayling receives Primary Health Care Award for Leadership 2008
  • Director Trissel Mayor becomes President of NZAAHD in November 2008
  • Nurse Mo Harte completes her Nurse Practitioner portfolio in June 2009.
  • Accreditation with the NZ Quality Improvement Council in March 2010.
