The Legal Stuff

The Youth One Stop Shop works from a youth development framework; this is inclusive of a strengths based approach and focuses on harm minimisation. All services and programmes reflect the principle that the welfare and interest of the young person are the first and paramount consideration.

The Youth One Stop Shop (YOSS) acknowledges the primacy of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand. YOSS is a tauiwi organisation committed to a journey of biculturalism.


YOSS adheres to the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights. This provides clients with:


Right 1: The right to be treated with respect - this covers physical privacy 
Right 2: The right to freedom from discrimination, coercion, harassment and exploitation 
Right 3: The right to dignity and independence 
Right 4: The right to services of an appropriate standard 
Right 5: The right to effective communication 
Right 6: The right to be fully informed 
Right 7: The right to make an informed choice and give informed consent 
Right 8: The right to support 
Right 9: Rights in respect of teaching and research 
Right 10: The right to complain

We also run youth focus groups with our clients so that they can help us with service planning and review.

Service exclusions:

Our counselling, social work and youth work services have the following service exclusions: sexual abuse, intellectual disability, learning difficulties and severe mental health.


Clinical psychology has the following service exclusions: sexual abuse, violence and anger, intellectual disability, learning difficulties, conduct disorder and severe mental health.


All YOSS services are free for people aged between 10 and 24 (up to their 24th birthday) living in Palmerston North. 



YOSS's legal structure is an incorporated society with charitable status. We are lucky to have a voluntary team of board members to guide us: -
